"He can't know what it was like, not the first time, not the last. He can guess, but he won't ever know, not really. What it was like, what she was thinking, everything she'd never told him. Whether she thought he'd failed her, or whether she wanted him to let her go. This, more than anything, makes him feel that she's gone."

"When at school people ask if he has siblings: two sisters, but one died; when, one day, he looks at the small bump that will always mar the bridge of Jack's nose and wants to trace it, gently, with his finger. When, a long, long time later, he stares down at the silent blue marble of the earth and thinks of his sister, as he will at every important moment of his life. He doesn't know this yet, but he senses it deep down in his core. So much will happen, he thinks, that I would want to tell you."

OH MY GODDD THIS BOOK IS SO BRILLIANT AND CELESTE NG IS AN ABSOLUTE GENIUS I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!! genuinely this book was lowkey life-changing. the way celeste ng writes is just so all-encapsulating and THE FORESHADOWING IS ALWAYS SO ON POINT OMG IT'S SO SPOOKY AND SO WELL DONE. the way she writes about the lee family dynamic and all the tiny details leading up to lydia's death was so interesting, the ending literally jaw my jaw on the floor. i just love her style of writing, especially how she always does this thing where she makes it clear the narrator knows so much more than the people in the story. like she'll often write "later, they will find out.." or "a long time after, he will remember.." and things like that. idk what it is about it it just completely elevates the story and makes you think more deeply about it. 10/10, 100% would recommend.
