Notes on 'Camp'
by Susan Sontag
informative
reflective
medium-paced
I loved this little collection of 2 essays by Susan Sontag! As an art student, this makes me want to get the larger collection of essays (Against Interpretation, and Other Essays) that Notes on Camp and One Culture and the New Sensibility was pulled from. Notes on camp is a very interesting reference text for understanding "Camp" as an aesthetic philosophy that exists within many art forms and expressions, and resists many artistic conventions that take themselves seriously. Camp in contrast centres play and manifests into a new form of artistic beauty and mastery in it of itself by leaning into humour, play and imperfection. One culture and the new sensibility further discussed art as it contrasts with paradigms of knowledge and science and interrogated this binary of art vs technology and science in a brilliant way.
