I loved Vivian. She was pragmatic, direct, and responsible in her relationship with Dante, never letting him intimidate or dictate or condescend to her. It was gratifying to see a FMC make decisions based on reason rather than giving into emotion toward the MMC at every critical turn; it made it feel like Vivian and Dante had a true, sustainable attraction to one another, as opposed to a hollow dynamic strung together by lustful moments that buried their true issues. Vivian and Dante worked through their serious problems in a patient, respectful way that made me glad they ended up together because it seemed like they truly cared for one another and had an undeniable bond. Further, I appreciated how Huang illustrated the always stressful and often toxic relationship between a daughter and her Eastern parents, as it is a relatable sore spot for children of such parents and their partners who watch their significant other painfully contort to meet unrealistic, contrived standards. Dante was a huge support to Vivian as she tried to break that cycle, even if he did not understand it, and Vivian helped Dante in countless ways as well, ultimately making him a better person in my opinion. I am taking points off my rating for the numerous grammatical errors I found throughout the book.
