This graphic novel is incredibly intentional and empowering. It tells the story of what it means for a young Dominican girl to embrace herself in a world where assimilation and being “presentable” is praised over the radical power of accepting yourself as you are. Our natural crown is so beautiful and versatile!

Content Warnings

Moderate: Bullying and Death of parent

All throughout the book, the main character’s family disparage her about her curly hair and basically call it ugly and unkempt and explain why she must straighten it all the time. It is mentioned that AntiBlackness is the main source of people’s attitudes about what grows out of her head naturally. It wasn’t included in the list of content warnings so I figured I would put it here.
