Digging Up Mother: A Love Story by Doug Stanhope

Audio book review.
No rating - memoir.

OMG listen to this book in audio. You must. You absolutely must. Trigger warnings for language and sexual content. These things come flying out of nowhere in the narration, so be on your guard! Lol.
I was drawn in from the first few chapters, the relationship Doug has with his mother, his quirky way of speaking and recalling stories, his blunt and honest delivery. There were bits in the middle that were slower-paced, but then something truly shocking would be said, or the narrator would change, and suddenly you're drawn back in and reminded that this guy really doesn't care what you or anyone else thinks. At one point, Doug actually is stumbling over his words so much he just goes "Fuck it, I'm just gonna tell you the story" and goes off-script. I LOVE the mixed narration, the insertion of candid interviews with those in the book, the brutally honest language that doesn't shy away from any sensitive topic. I also love the fact that for probably most of the narration, Doug is drinking and it affects his performance. There's even a random belch in there. There are disgusting bits, like the one wedding scene with the tampon (gag!), but overall, it's a truly unique memoir. Not for the faint of heart.
