The Otherworldlies by Jennifer Anne Kogler
4.0

This was really good. The main character is a seventh grader named Fern who can communicate with her dog, can correctly predict the weather (two years running), and blisters from just moments in the sun. Not surprisingly, she is not one of the popular kids and is ostracized by most everyone around her, except for her twin brother Sam.

When she closes her eyes in class one day and opens them to find herself on the beach just miles away from her school, the truth about Fern begins to come out. With her brother's help, Fern tries to control her new powers. Add to this the appearance of an ages old vampire in town who has an unusual interest in Fern.

I was surprised that the main character was as young as she was--I was expecting a sixteen or seventeen year old at least. The book did seem to lag in the middle when Fern visits New Tartarus but overall it was one I couldn't put down. The author also works in some mythological references too. I would definitely be interested in reading more about Fern but I don't know if this was a stand alone or the first of a series.
