Reservation Road by John Burnham Schwartz
3.0

This book is immediately gripping, and is written in a style that is almost poetic at times. It is told from the perspective of three narrators, each of whom is more self-aware than I think most people actually are; however, rather than making the book unbelievable, I think this introspection simply adds fascinating layers to the reader’s understanding of the actions that take place in Reservation Road.

The story focuses primarily on two fathers: one, whose son is killed in a hit-and-run car accident, and the other, who actually performs the hit-and-run. Over the course of the story, we watch each man struggle with his grief (obviously very different types of grief, but both are depressed and tormented just the same).

I did feel a bit like I was slogging through the middle of the book, but the beginning and ending are page-turners, and make it difficult to break away from the story. The culmination is well-worth reading through the vaguely repetitive and slow middle section. Overall, a well-written novel with thoughtfully created characters.
