The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule
dark
reflective
medium-paced
5.0
This book was interesting on so many levels. Ann Rule is just a great writer. You would think that such subject matter would be fascinating no matter who writes about it, but true crime (especially now that it is so overdone) takes skill and finesse to pull off. Ann has a way of humanizing Ted Bundy that does not devalue the humanity of the women whose lives he took.
Obviously the intrigue of this book is that Ann knew Ted personally, and coincidentally was contracted to write about the violent crimes he committed before investigators knew his identity. But with the quality of her writing, it wouldn't even matter whether she knew him or not. She allows it to inform rather than bias her writing.
This is the first book I've read by Ann Rule and it won't be the last!
