Vanishing World
by Sayaka Murata
In true Sayaka Murata's fashion, this book explores themes of conformity, sex and family told in a deadpan tone. While this tone worked for me in her other works, in this book, it felt dull.
The concept was thought-provoking, but the constant repetition of thoughts quickly tired me out. It also would have been interesting if Murata had shown the transition of this world from the previous one, but she just dropped all the details in chunks, so the world-building felt thin. For instance, how did it become widely accepted that sex between married couples is considered incest, but having lovers outside marriage is viewed as normal? The incest taboo seems too far-fetched.
And I feel like that ending was just there for shock value.
