I was initially unsure of this - it wasn't what I expected it to be in the first few pages. I got into it much quicker than I expected to and found the pacing the perfect level of slow-but-not-boring. It was refreshing to read a novel with a (somewhat cliched) tortured male artist as the protagonist, in the wake of the volume of modern novels featuring tortured women in the same position.
