A Journey to the Centre of the Earth
by Jules Verne
Well, it had a great beginning. When James Mason...wait...no that was the movie...when the professor (whose name I can't be bothered to remember) finds and deciphers a secret message that points him in the direction of the cavern entrance to get to the Centre of the Eaarrrrrrth. And since that was the highlight of the whole story, it went downhill from there. Thank the stars this painful Journey is over. I should call this "Journey to the Edge of my Patience and Beyond". This was the most boring and tedious "adventure story" ever.
Herein you may expect endless descriptions of walking along underground corridors and caverns, endless raft sailing on an underground Sea, endless professorial lecturing, and endless endless endless whining by the nephew (who was also the narrator). In fact, every time something seemed like it was happening, it would reveal itself to instead be a dream sequence or imagination of the the nephew.
I very much preferred the movie. All of them. Even the ones with The Rock in them. Now that's saying something.
