Midworld by Alan Dean Foster

3.0

I bought this book, because I heard it was a lot like Avatar, and I used to really be into the Pip and Flinx series.

I don't know how Avatar didn't get sued for copying this book. Wow, there are a lot of similarities!

It starts with terrific world building, however I didn't like the way it was told. More of a distant point of view than I like and it was rather boring.

I hated all of the head hopes. One minute Born is telling the story, then the furcot, then one of the aliens, then the other hunter. It was just too confusing.

I really liked the furcot, Ruumahum. He reminded me of Pip.

Unfortunately, I didn't like Born much. (the main character) He was mostly concerned with getting praise from his village. He gave most of the worth of his hunt to a pretty girl who never thanked him and indeed, insulted him.

Born really grew on me over the course of the book though and he was a good protag after all. I like an intelligent main character.

It got more interesting when Born met the "aliens".

The action scenes against the Akadi (I totally pictured them as giant ants) were quite good. A bit long, but he knows how to write a battle scene.

I'm sure Avatar's battle was a more epic, exciting way to end a movie, but the natives wouldn't stand much of a chance in an all out battle against such superior technology, and I preferred Midworld's ending where Born had to outsmart the bad guys. There probably should've been a little more foreshadowing, but I still enjoyed it.

Also, what's up with that cover? Furcot are supposed to look cat-like. That looks more like a cow to me. (The cover of Mid Flinx, which also takes place on this world, is much better.)

Too many people died.
