The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
3.0
mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

Now, I do have to say that I liked this one MUCH more than the last Inheritance Games book. However, this still had A LOT of the downfalls of that book. I think Jennifer Lynn Barnes just doesn't know how to balance different POV's really well. It isn't as bad in this book because they are all doing similair things, part of the same story, but the switching between them often times felt very jarring and abrupt. There's also definitely certain POV's that were WAY less interesting than others. It just felt really awkward, and I do think this could have been better of with one POV instead.
I also just feel like this book was VERY dragged out. I feel like when it comes to the personal storylines/mysteries of these characters we went absolutely nowhere during this book. It was really annoying to just not see any of that move forward until the very end. Then we only get a couple of small reveals, just to make the ending feel bigger, and more exciting so you'll pick up the sequel. It pissed me of so much. Especially because that ending is so abrupt as well. It feels like we quit in the middle of a scene. Blergh! I truly think this could just have been way thighter in that department. Oh, and the romances felt SUPER forced. They completely came out of nowhere, and didn't need to be in this book at all.
Despite all those many complaints, I did still quite enjoy this book. I thought the game in this one was quite interesting. There were some different puzzles throughout this that I also thought were really well crafted. I had a fun time trying to figure out some of these myself. The best thing about the multiple POV's was getting to see how different people solved the same clues differently. I just thought that aspect to this book was really well executed. I also thought the personal stuff set up was really interesting (which made it more frustrating that we barely moved forward with these things), and I did quite like our cast of characters (Gigi has my heart). I am overall still quite excited to read the sequel as well because I am just really interested. I just fear this might have been better being one book instead of multiple, but we'll see.
