Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield
4.0

This book was so lovely, beautiful, and the sadness it felt me with lingered! I couldn’t put this book down and appreciated reading between the different perspectives of these couple at the center of this tragedy - Miri and Leah. Bouncing back and forth between Leah’s past and Miri’s present wove a compelling tale with an understanding and compassion for both.

Our Wives Under the Sea didn’t require any deep-sea knowledge or expertise of a marine biology, but was able to guide the reader through those topics with ease, while literally ushering us to and through the depths of the ocean. Loved it.

This book left some small questions unanswered, but at the worthy trade-off of providing an end that provides finality and closure surrounding the biggest themes of life - love, grief, and loss. Much like in life, those little (and certainly intentional) loose ends didn’t end up mattering in the grand scheme of things.

Armfield painted a brilliantly devastating story I know I will return to again and again in the coming years. Thank you for sharing your work with us!

Another book with similar sapphic love and a growing distance between partners that came to mind while reading was, “Love and Other Thought Experiments” by Sophie Ward. Would recommend for all my fellow sapphics looking for more representation in literature!
