Three Men on the Bummel by Jerome K. Jerome

3.0

This sequel to Three Men on a Boat is very much in the voice of the original book, full of amusing stories and observations. Since the first book was criticized for the long travelogue passages, the author promises right away to avoid these, but he doesn't always keep to his word.

The book is most amusing in the beginning, although if you've read the first book you might feel he hasn't really added anything to his formula. He seems to spend less time on his friends, who don't stand out as much as individuals this time around.

As in the first book, he makes some interesting observations. He spends a lot of time towards the end on the German people, which is interesting because his portrayal of a lovely, kind group very obedient to authority who will probably always be lovely as long as they are never under the influence of a bad leader is weirdly prescient.

It feels ultimately slighter than the first book, which was itself quite slight, but it's worth reading.
