Taste of Torment
by Suzanne Wright
This was an okay read. I thought the the first book was the best, but I think I liked Taste of Torment better than the second in the series.
I will say that the big battle in this installment was so much better than in the prior two books. It lasted a good amount of time and felt more fulfilling, if that makes any sense.
I think my big issue is that Sam came off as a strong female lead in the first book, but now she's just defensive and sometimes mean. I get that she doesn't want anyone to think they can walk all over her, but I think some people are worth ignoring. Sam doesn't have to dignify every rude word said by every insignificant character with a response. I was tired of her constantly having to belittle those that offended her. It's like she's made it her duty in life to cut people down and put them in their place.
In that same vein, I felt really bad for Collins. He thought he was doing his job and they all thought he was just doing his job, but everyone was really mean to him. Don't get me wrong, he was no peach, but the way he was presented, it seemed like all he wanted was to fit in (as evidenced by the story of why he was Turned and his trying to hang out with the squad) but he didn't know how to do that and he just went about it the wrong way. I felt that they could have approached that situation differently.
It was an interesting read, though! I really liked the idea of evolution having it's ways of affecting the vampire population as well.
