The Half of It by Madison Beer

emotional hopeful inspiring reflective sad fast-paced

How much of your identity can you sacrifice to achieve your goals? Can you still enjoy achieving them if you had to suppress yourself to get there? And (how) can our inner child and our big aspirations co-exist?

In “The half Of It”, Madison takes us on her journey of navigating fame as a young girl in the age of social media. Although she reflects on her experiences as being specific to her being celebrity, her story can be relatable to anyone who has been perceived on social media. Social media turn us into voyeurs of our own lives, watching the picture we paint of ourselves through the eyes of others and letting it identify us.

As Madison writes this book she is in the process of healing from bad experiences due to fame and social media, including her nudes being leaked at 15, and her privacy being taken away in many other ways. She is very brave to tell her story like this, and I have to applaud her for possessing the wisdom to turn her bad experiences into teaching moments for her fans.

While I would not consider it a memoir specifically, it is a powerful piece of literature that I hope many teenagers will read.
