A Crown of Ivy and Glass by Claire Legrand
DID NOT FINISH: 36%

The concept of this book is so, so good and yet it falls flat so spectacularly Legrand should get an award.

Gemma is such a ridiculously unlikable protagonist it's not even funny. She's not even the fun unlikable/flawed protagonist. It is so bad. It's not even that her being a full-of-herself rich girl whose main concerns are either parties or her love-at-first-sight squeeze she has zero chemistry with is bad per se. Honest, it's the grounds for what could've been an incredibly interesting flawed protagonist with a lot of room for character growth. It's that Legrand does literally nothing with it. The protagonist changes very little if at all through the story.

Things seem to always miraculously work out for her - in fact, that aforementioned squeeze of hers has the power to make her not feel the chronic illness she deals with, which... knowing that
there's this implied malicious intent from Talan - like he could use his powers to manipulate Gemma so he can get into her father's good graces, then turn around and backstab her - this could've been an incredible story beat where Gemma could learn and grow, and yet it never happens. Turns out he's Good Actually. Ugh.

Props to the audiobook narrator though. She nails the sort of pompous ass Gemma is perfectly. If you  want to experience the book, the audiobook's the way to go.
