First of all, MAJOR content warning for this one. The nauseatingly realistic DV descriptions keep coming from cover to cover, including physical violence as well as humiliation, control, financial abuse, and failed attempts at leaving.
That being said, I was fascinated by the structure of this book, with three parallel timelines unfolding from the day the mother Cora registers her newborn son’s name. It took directions I didn’t expect, and the author explored many levels and nuances of abuse and trauma recovery. I especially appreciated the exploration of Cora’s children’s relationships. There was hope in here.
