"sometimes gods are gods and sometimes they're pimps"
well, that's one way to start off a book, and from then on this book is executed perfectly. This is the type of irreverent, wild ride, hilariously dark book I love to read. It's very fast paced, written in verse, that just moves the story along quickly, and gets into the depraved minds of everyone involved. I do adore retellings of myth, especially Greek classics such as Theseus and the Minotaur, of Asterion. Humans are monsters, twisting Asterion into something dark and primal and full of rage. Theseus was so privileged and delighted in violence. Ariande was caught in between, a strong woman but betrays her brother for a doomed love. God, the Greeks were the BEST at just finding tragedy in everything and making it sound so great. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It was fun, Poseidon was a hoot and a half. I liked that it was so irreverent, it made fun of the Greeks, of the king, even of the gods, and didn't take itself seriously. I love that in a book, and also particularly enjoyed that although told in colloquial language, it didn't inherently change the story. In the end, the only one who has a happy ending is Theseus and he's still a total jerk.
