Golden Son by Pierce Brown

5.0

After the amazing “Red Rising” I had every confidence that Pierce Brown had the skills to pull off an amazing series and he did not disappoint!

“Golden Son” takes place a couple of years after the end of “Red Rising”. The beginning suggested that the book would follow a structure similar to Red Rising but I’m quite glad Pierce Brown chose another route which made the book very interesting.

He also really knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seat! The characters grow and change and so do the relationships between them. Darrow, the protagonist, gets thrown into the mud (sometimes literally), only to gloriously rise, only to get trampled on again. It’s a roller coaster of hope and despair and I freaking loved it. This book made me laugh and cry, it had me screaming “I KNEW IT!!” and “WHAT THE HECK?!”

The twist and turns just keep coming, it’s a wild ride and I cannot wait to read the next one in the series (EDIT: I did read book 3-5 now and it was GREAT).

EDIT:
Re-Read December 2020:

Golden Son is such a different experience when you know what's coming. It was so rewarding to be able to pick up on all the little clue that lead up to the big twists. Especially the finale was double impactful because I knew exactly where we were going. Also, knowing who Darrow can trust and who he can't makes the reread very interesting.
