If You Come Softly by Jacqueline Woodson
3.0

Just as beautifully written as any of Woodson’s work, and covers the same kind of complex themes with a deft hand, but this almost felt TOO spare for my liking. The building up of Miah and Ellie’s relationship felt scattered, and we get so little of Ellie and Miah’s family in the aftermath that I didn’t quite know how to feel about how it all wrapped up. Miah and Ellie were both built up well as individuals with their own struggles and hopes, but I wanted to feel more taken with their star crossed lovers bit. I can understand love at first sight especially in the context of high school students, but I wanted more from both of them about what it was, how they knew, what made each other different than anyone else.

This is a quick read and existing Woodson fans will no doubt enjoy it, though I do think I would have felt differently about it were it my first experience with her work.
