Joyful Noise is a selection of poetry meant to be read aloud by two readers. Each of the poems is written in the voice of different insects: mayflies speak of their short lives, while fireflies speak of their composition in lights. The poems are informational, but they are also often comic; for example, water striders speak about how they can’t teach other insects to walk on water the way they do. When I read this collection, I regretted that I didn’t have anyone to read it aloud with me; I could see how the patterns of the voices were intended to reflect the character of the different insects, but I couldn’t recreate the effect by myself. The book also has very lovely—and again, often funny—line illustrations by Eric Beddows; the illustrations are often woven among the text, making them an essential part of the reading experience.
