With a Vengeance
by Riley Sager
As a big Riley Sager fan, this was extremely disappointing. Besides the fact that the story takes place on a train, it really lacked the old-school feeling I was hoping it would have. The premise is an obvious nod to past mystery stories and writers like Agatha Christie, but it lacked all the charm. I didn't mind Anna as a main character and really didn't mind the supporting cast either. They were annoying/dislikable but purposefully so. The big issue I had with this one was the plot itself. It was so clunky, and the end felt like Sager was just throwing twist after twist at the reader. The plot, which started out far-fetched, became that much more far-fetched with each twist and turn of the story. I was rolling my eyes at some of the reveals and things that happened in this novel. The premise did not sound exciting to me to start with, but I was willing to give it a try because Sager wrote it. Unfortunately, I was right in thinking this one was not for me.
