Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

Told through alternating timelines, this story focuses on the Riva family: their dramatic family history and the legendary annual Malibu house party the siblings throw, this particular one being in August 1983. All four of the famous siblings have secrets they are hiding that night. As the night goes on, the party gets out of control and the house ends up in flames. This is a night that will change their lives forever.

I had very high expectations for this one going in. Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my all time favorite authors and anything she writes I will automatically buy without even reading a synopsis. When I read what it was about, Malibu Rising quickly became my most anticipated book of 2021 and I’m happy to say it did not disappoint at all.

Taylor Jenkins Reid has this remarkable ability to create incredible characters who are both elusive and feel like you’ve known them forever at the same time, and the Rivas family are those kinds of characters. Reading about them, they feel real. I was so invested in this family, I felt like like I knew them. I felt their heartbreak and anguish, I felt hopeful for them against all odds. This book made me smile and it made me cry, and I couldn’t put it down until I finished. It is truly incredible.

After finishing my advanced copy, I immediately preordered this one, as I know I’ll come back to it again some day and need a hard copy of my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for the advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Malibu Rising will be released June 1, and I highly suggest you pre-order so you can have it as soon as possible.
