I love my regency era literature. I love reading most books written by women and published over 100 years ago. I feel kinship with them. It is heartbreaking that the Porter Sisters were forgotten by time. Which makes it all the more inspiring that they were finally given their rightful dues in this book. The author has clearly dedicated so much of her life to these women and it was work that surely emulated the Porter Sisters own intense work ethic. It would have made them proud.
In many ways it felt like reading a soap opera. The drama! The romance! The betrayal! The demise! For that it felt entirely human and wonderful. Your heart truly is with the Porter Sisters the whole time, you feel completely immersed in their lives as if you were there yourself.
My mildest critiques were simply pacing, particularly in the beginning. And that is most likely a personal preference. Weirdly I wanted more editorial writing? I would have loved an epilogue of just the author's thoughts on the Porters. It's still woven in throughout the text, but man I would have loved a good feminist rant. But maybe that's just because I keep going on feminist rants about this book now.
Now I just have to figure out how in the world I can read Jane and Maria's books!
