Let me just re-iterate… MALAKAI. FUCKING. AZER.

I’m tempted to make this review a list of my favorite quotes and just leave it at that…

“She is the single most destructive thing I have ever desired, and yet, it is the diamond on her finger that will destroy me.”

“I am no one’s Queen” — “Then you have no idea how much power you hold over me.”

“You’re quite the poet, Prince.” — “And you the muse, darling.”

“If you want me to fight you, I won’t, Paedyn.” I told you in that field of poppies how I would never do that again. That when I lay a hand on you, it would only ever be in a caress.”

“Every person who has ever said that to me is gone. And I… I need you more than I need those words.”

“I am no strange to drowning. I’ve been doing just that since the day I looked into her ocean eyes.”

“My name means nothing to me until she speaks it. Nothing until she claims it as her own.”

“My favorite color is the shade of her, a sliver of the vibrance she exudes. And I will gladly drown, gladly burn, gladly fall into those blue eyes until the day she looks at me for the last time.”

“My duty may be to the king, but my heart, Pae, is wherever you are. It is in the palm of your hands, the pad of your thumb. So, if you leave, I will follow. If you stay, I will bow. Because there has never been a moment when you did not own the only piece of me that mattered - loving you made me matter.”

“You don’t need a blade. I would bleed if only you asked.”

“I breathe in my bride. She tastes like my forever.” — “King and Queen. Shadow and Flame. Poet and Muse.”

I mean… c’mon. Let’s hear it for the boy bc DAMN.

I was hoping for BIG things after Reckless and Lauren Roberts slayed. Literally every issue I had with the second book was corrected, if you will, in Fearless.

Paedyn:
Pae isn’t my favorite FMC, but the growth she went through in this book gave me proud mom energy. Her strength was shown in a very quiet and unyielding way. It was… no, SHE was deeply rooted in resilience.

It was beautiful to see Kai continually remind Pae that she may be called an ordinary, yet she is anything but. She was not given powers at birth, but rather earned her power through the trials and tribulation she endured throughout her life. Kai helped her realize that her power didn’t come from magic - it came from within. What a beautiful realization.

Kai:
Words will never do this man justice. Ever.

The duality that is Malakai Azer was so easy to fall in love with. He is the enforcer, the picture of the brutality the King possesses. Yet, with Pae, we see a man with his heart on his sleeve. He is a man who loved so deeply and unconditionally. He would bleed for Pae without flinching. He would bow to her without thought. He is a King and damnit he has set a standard for all future book boyfriends.

Pae & Kai:
They were forbidden. There was so much push and pull. The sacrifices. The tension. The yearning. The whiplash. Their love story was epic.

These two will forever own a piece of my heart. They were inevitable, but their road to a happy ending was full of twists and turns… PAINFUL twists and turns thank you very much. But, love always prevails, and now they have a family… a sweet princess, Kit. I literally cannot.

Kitt:
This man deserved so much more than what he got. And I understand why his story was written as it was, I do. But damnit… my heart breaks for Kitt.

This book game Kitt the complex character development I was looking for. He turned out to be deeply misunderstood and a tortured soul.

All Kitt wanted was his father’s approval and his brother’s love. Losing his father centered his attention on Kai and Kai’s love, so when Paedyn began to “threaten” their brotherhood, Kitt spiraled… and well, we saw how that played out.

As much as I wish there would have been a true redemption arc for Kitt, I think he was always meant to be his own demise. After-all, that deep rooted need for love and validation tends to ruin us in real life, too…

Thank you, Lauren Roberts, for this beautiful series and characters that I will always carry in my heart.

Until… whatever the hell.
