Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon
5.0

Unlike [b:Acheron|2299110|Acheron (Dark-Hunter, #15)|Sherrilyn Kenyon|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1312230925s/2299110.jpg|3202442], I actually really think the love story and Styxx's past were infinitely more balanced. Bethany wasn't perfect for Styxx because of basic human decency, but because she truly fell in love with him only knowing the real him not her assumptions based on his position.

It's like the best parts of [b:Born of Silence|9645248|Born of Silence (The League, #5)|Sherrilyn Kenyon|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1307663746s/9645248.jpg|14532721] and [b:Dance with the Devil|84145|Dance with the Devil (Dark-Hunter, #4; Were-Hunter, #1)|Sherrilyn Kenyon|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1316129440s/84145.jpg|991924]. The lover who meets the prince and falls in love with the real him and the goddess who can't see so has to judge truly based on personality not looks.

Also Styxx is a badass. And he earned it through his jerk-off dad sending him to the training from hell since he was about 10 maybe. And I loved the way Urian and Alexion reacted to realising he was "Styxx of Didymous".
I also really, really liked the reality check Acheron had to have about the truth of the past, and the fact that he really was sorry about his actions adding to Styxx's pain. And the guilt he had over not knowing Bethany's name. And while I don't love Tory as Acheron heroine I do love the way she described Ryssa, as a naive foolish girl who saw only what she wanted to see. Truly she meant the best for Acheron but other than him she cared only for herself. Truly, Styxx is right that she made things worse for Acheron in the long run because of her naivety.

I don't mind that the resolution was so rushed as the love story between Styxx and Bethany was all through out the story. The halves of Styxx's life before and after his death are far better integrated than in [b:Acheron|2299110|Acheron (Dark-Hunter, #15)|Sherrilyn Kenyon|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1312230925s/2299110.jpg|3202442]. And so even had Bethany been a mortal reincarnated I would have thought her perfect for Styxx, not because I'm glad he's happy now, but because she is worthy of him, something I still don't feel about Tory and Acheron.

Finally though
SpoilerAcheron's face when he realised what he'd done to Styxx. And the wham-line that Acheron stole Styxx's birthright as a Cthothian. I do wonder though, now he's been reborn as a Cthothian, does his arm heal? Is Acheron still a Cthothian or did he give those powers back?
Also what powers was Styxx originally meant to have that were left as limited telepathy, headaches and constant nose-bleeds? Are his headaches and nose-bleeds cured now?
And finally if Ash saw Styxx come back twice before why didn't he get reborn as a Cthothian before? Does it take three deaths because surely Styxx was "killed" before?

And Artemis! The way she bitch-slapped her mother over Kat. I know that she's self absorbed but she's not Apollo and she just needs to see that she's not the be all and end all of reality.
