At first, I was quite confused as to why this novel is often categorized as a self-healing read. What I felt in the beginning was more discomfort than anything else. Aza’s habits—especially with her finger—were so disturbing that it made it difficult for me to keep reading.
But as I went further, I began to understand—or perhaps more accurately, to feel. Maybe it’s because I’m sensitive, or maybe I have a strong sense of empathy, but I found myself slipping into Aza’s spiral of thoughts. And from there, I realized that the chaos in her head isn’t something that can be “cured” easily. She often can’t win against the internal conversations inside her mind.

Graphic: Mental illness, Panic attacks/disorders, Self harm
