Angel of Darkness by Stephanie Amaral

3.0

I absolutely adore the world the author has created, so I was looking forward to Alison and Max' story.

Let me start off by saying that the writing of the author kept me hooked in this story: as always, she delivered fast interactions, and the story is easy to read. However, Alison and Max as characters felt flat to me. I didn't find their chemistry believable because the only thing they had was a push and pull that seemed to be primarily based on physical attraction. It wasn't realistic for Alison to be so deeply enamoured with Max for when he gave her nothing. They don't have banter. Any flirtation takes a mean turn, Max essentially just makes her life harder. I kept hoping that we would see some secret dating scenes between the two. The side characters and rejected men stole the show.
And I hate to say it, but because of that, the cliffhanger wasn't the gut punch in the way that previous ones were.

In the next book, I really need for them to grow emotionally and have some tough conversations, and actually show care beyond getting O's.
