I'm now just working through the New 52 version of Birds of Prey and it has been my first foray with this team. I really enjoyed the first two volumes and the third did not disappoint. The Birds of Prey's current team is made up of Black Canary, Batgirl, Starling, and Katana but it seems ever-changing with a stint by Poison Ivy and new faces this issue. Volume 3 of this saga collects Batgirl Annual #1 and issues #13-17 of Birds of Prey.

I had previously read the Batgirl Annual but it was a good refresher for coming events within Birds of Prey and setting up Batgirl's connection with the Talon, Strix. I really enjoyed Catgirl's appearance in the annual. Her ruthlessness as well as her strange moral sensibilities were on full display. She's such an intriguing character and I have no idea why I haven't read any of her own comics before.

The Birds of Prey, still recovering from their last experience with Poison Ivy, immediately come up against another foe. Katana's past comes back to haunt her as the Dagger Clan is plotting a major play and Condor becomes wrapped up in the middle of it. Black Canary on the other hand is trying to keep her powers in check as her Canary Cry spirals out of control while Batgirl introduces an even more volatile member to the mix.

There was a lot happening with the Birds of Prey in this volume but Swierczynski does an excellent job of managing each member's storylines and maneuvering new pieces into play. I love the constantly shifting makeup of this team which allows me to get to know some unfamiliar faces in the DC universe. Plus I love the interaction between characters that a team provides and the new faces should provide some interesting storylines going forward. The art by Molenaar is fantastic throughout these comics capturing the fight sequences perfectly.
