AND!!! As someone actually from the armpit of America, it makes sense to me that"Sloan" is from Colts Neck, NJ. Nobody asked, but my impression of Colts Neck is that everyone goes to Raney and has a "farm" on their property for tax purposes.
ANYWAY! I feel like this book is The Clique if The Clique took place in Shanghai and also included the backstory of the main character's step father as a major plot device. This app has no comment feature, so I'm just going to imagine the two people who have also read The Clique and this book agreeing with me
