On Wings of Blood
by Briar Boleyn
Briar Boleyn's Blood of A Fae series remains to this day one of my favourite romantasy series ever. I was hooked from the prologue, and the love has only grown in time. The final line left me with a bittersweet feeling, knowing that everyone got their closure and the ending they deserved.
Well, anyone apart from Medra, right? Her storyline was so heartbreaking from the start; she was mistreated and misunderstood, but she still had love, the love of a family that goes beyond blood. So, when I saw Medra was getting her own story, I was ecstatic. I had the privilege of reading the ARC as a member of Briar's team, and I was so excited to dive into it.
On Wings of Blood, Book 1 in the Bloodwing Academy introduces us to an entirely new world where vampires rule, and others exist to serve. A world where dragons and dragon riders are nothing more than history. That is the world Medra finds herself in. A world she knows nothing of. And a world where she is recognized as a bearer of change—the one with dragon rider blood. The Bloodwing Academy, with its unique blend of dark academia and fantastical elements, is a captivating setting. In a world where power and strength are key, she is seen as the most prized possession. Thus, her new life begins...
Brair has created a dark academia setting where oppression rules and there are no limits for those in power. And the one (unofficially) ruling them all? Blake Drakeharrow, the epitome of a morally grey character. The main plot occurs at the Bloodwing Academy, a ruthless and cruel place. Medra must learn to navigate its professors, students, and harsh rules while trying to decipher the true nature of her and Blake's relationship. Love, passion, and hate are intertwined with harsh words and harsh actions taken. I feel like we have yet to see their relationship fully blossom and find a healing path.
On Wings of Blood is a fabulous introduction to a new, dark academia world that is captivating and intriguing with a unique plot merging vampires, dragons and dark magic. If you love stories reminiscent of Draco in the Manacled, I feel this would be right up your alley. I can't wait to see where Briar will take us next, especially after that ending.
