autismandniamh 's review for:
Carmilla
by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
Surprisingly modern language and rather good gothic/gory twists made this short read infinitely more engaging than most vampire fiction I've encountered. And of course, the glimpses of sapphism provide intriguing allegory (the monster = the lesbian), as well as welcome and extra-ordinary representation within literature at a historic time when lesbian desire was largely ridiculed and misunderstood. Recommended!
