A Family Matter
by Claire Lynch
A Family Matter is living proof that stories create awareness and nurture empathy. While not blown away by this book, I’m still glad I read it.
Speaking from a point of privilege, this was not a story that immediately grabbed my attention. The first half of the book, I thought this was just another story in which True Love excused all behaviors (a plot I consider lazy and do not find entertaining at all). So I was side eyeing the characters and it crossed my mind to simply abort the mission and DNF the book.
I’m glad I kept reading, as the true message of the book only shows up in the second half of the book. Together with the author’s note at the end, I get why A Family Matter receives so much praise and attention.
A Family Matter starts with Heron receiving the diagnosis that he is sick and he doesn’t know how to tell his only daughter Maggie. Now might be the time to tell her everything, to answer all her questions, and to finally enclose what happened with her mother years ago.
Again, not a new favorite, but still appreciated.
