The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
3.5
adventurous lighthearted fast-paced

This is really fast paced and action packed, though it seems a bit over-plotted and under-characterised. The heros can do no wrong, and the villainess is so completely evil that she seems to have no redeeming features.

The voice of the narrator is very distinct, even telling the reader at times that though the characters actions seem despicable to the modern audience (in 1845), the novel is set in the 1630s, and things were done differently there. There is a lightheartedness in this position that showed the author didn’t take the story to seriously.

I did find a lot of the plot, action and coincidences a little to convenient and the characters simplistic, but I shall continue with this series to find out what happens twenty years later.
