The Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare

2.0

A lifeless, confounding mess. Populated by cardboard cutouts—with the exception of the all-too-human Launce and his dog Crab—who engage in stiff, low-budget Marx Brothers-type banter with each other, doing the same tiresome trick of twisting homonyms over and over. There are glimpses of future, better Shakespeares here—ladies in disguise, lovers climbing ladders, lovably human clowns—but it’s a wreck, with an appalling and absurd conclusion.
