Red Country by Joe Abercrombie
5.0
This is a Revisionist Western / Wild West, and yes, it does take place in the western part of the world as well. It doesn't lack for humor, though there's a decided lack of fantasy. The technological level is less than one might expect for a Western, mostly due to the absence of guns. It isn't necessary to have read the previous two standalone books, but I'd advise it because it contains some spoilers for them.
I don't involve myself with Westerns much, but I'd say a lot of the book draws from various Westerns and references a lot that I didn't pick up on. During a discussion I summarized the book as "We begin with True Grit then take the Oregon Trail where they meet the Lone Ranger and Tonto and arrive in Deadwood." That doesn't cover the entire book or all of its influences by any means.
I didn't have much in the way of expectations because I'm generally indifferent to Westerns, but I quite enjoyed this. It was rather nice reading all the way through, though the final part assured it of being a five star.
