Sanctuary of Mine by Shelly Pratt

This was a very paced book that covered long periods of time often in just a few pages. There was definitely insta-love involved but the characters were so likeable it was easy to overlook.

This is a story of a girl, Mackenzie (AKA Mack) and her struggle with an eating disorder and fractured relationship with her mother. It's also the story of Tyler and his instant attraction and need to get to know her and the fact that he recognizes in her what he saw happen to his own sister. As quickly as they come together they are torn apart by uncontrollable circumstances.

Through a series of amazingly sweet letters they keep in touch and discover they might be worth holding onto.

When life brings them back together its whirlwind of perfection and things look great for the two of them.

Then suddenly tragedy strikes and Mack shuts down pushing away everyone that cares about her especially Tyler.

I never saw that tragedy coming and certainly didn't expect it to be so gruesome. It was heartbreaking to read as Mack tried to deal, or not deal, with it.

I love how Tyler always seemed to come to her rescue and somehow always knew the right way to push or not to push.

I didn't have a lot of love for Mack's mom for "letting" it go on for so long but also realize it must've been pure hell for her too.

This was not a light-hearted book but at the same time I don't feel like it was overly angsty. It does end with an HEA so that's a bonus.
