Our Infinite Fates by Laura Steven
4.5

If you know the Broadway musical Hadestown, I think the lyric "to know how it ends and still begin to sing it again, as if it might turn out this time" perfectly encapsulates Our Infinite Fates.

This novel explores a millennium-spanning relationship between Evelyn and Arden. Like clockwork, every eighteen years they are destined to find and kill the other, ultimately ending their own life as well. Our Infinite Fates mostly follows a present day storyline, but has several chapters featuring the final moments of a past life shared between the couple. The two almost always fall in love, and Evelyn, try as she might, fights her hardest to convince Arden to let this be the life that they grow old together. Unfortunately, Arden always succeeds in taking her life (save for the ones where she slays him in self defense) and the cycle begins anew. This time around, there's more than just her life at stake, and Evelyn is desperate to make sure she's alive long enough to save her sister.

Gosh, this story was so poetic. So full of yearning, love and hope. And the twist - the why of their whole lifelong battle? I didn't see it coming. I absolutely loved it. I also appreciated the research and effort put in to ensure that every snippet we got of a past life was different, not only through them changing genders, but also countries and historical events. My only wish is that we could've seen how their love blossomed in their first life. I'd be so excited if a novella from Arden's POV were to come out sometime down the line. All in all, I really loved the concept and I will definitely be checking out more of Laura's works in the future!
