I was really enjoying this story at the beginning. The whole idea of Reuben’s friends supporting him and wanting to plan this super fun day with him to keep his mind off of his ex-girlfriends wedding was so cute and I was looking forward to seeing some positive male relationships and seeing the male perspective of dealing with a breakup. Once we actually get into the part where Beth calls him and they start flashing back to the issues with their relationship and why they broke up, it lost me. These people should not have been together as long as they were. They should have broken up as soon as Beth brought up something that is an issue for Reuben (it’s a mild spoiler so I won’t actually say it). From that moment on Reuben keeps this simmering resentment down deep and it continues to be an issue that comes up regularly and they keep fighting about it. If he wasn’t able to accept that this was something that wasn’t going to change they should have just broken up. And maybe that was the point of the story and I’m just being picky about it but it just wasn’t enjoyable for me to read this story about these people pining after each other, who shouldn’t have been together in the first place. I did like the way it ended but by then was sort of out of the story. I honestly would have DNFd this if it hadn’t been so short but I powered through.
