Scythe by Neal Shusterman
5.0
I would recommend Scythe to all my friends!
Death has been cured. You are never dead - even if you jump off a building, walk in front of a train, or impale yourself, you can only be deadish until you are revived. It's the law. If you grow too old for your liking, you can "turn the corner" and make yourself younger again. Diseases are a thing of the past, as is murder, crime, and government. Thunderhead is now in charge, and people are grateful that this "cloud" of information deals with any unfortunate occurrence. However, because people can never die, overpopulation is an issue. Enter the Scythes. Scythes are selected to live by a set of 10 rules, and they are the only true bringers of death. Scythes in a certain region must glean a certain number of people in a time frame to help keep populations under control. Citra and Rowan are two teenagers who become apprentices of Scythe Faraday. Neither want to be a Scythe, which makes them perfect candidates. However, a Scythe taking on two apprentices is unheard of, and Citra and Rowan now have more at stake than they ever thought.
I LOVED Scythe more than I ever thought possible! There were so many twists that caught me off guard, and sometimes reading this was just too much. Neal Shusterman has a way of making me feel ill when I read his books because there is something realistic about them. Scythe is told from the 3rd person perspective, though it alternates who it is focused on. What being a "Scythe" means is very different to some Scythes, and it is both interesting and terrifying to see how different Scythes interpret their jobs and their meaning, and how this impacts both Citra and Rowan.
