This is a book that has been recommended to me countless times since it’s been released, and I finally got to it. I can immediately see why people love Sally Rooney’s books. Her books are filled with feeling and emotion and have you wrapped up in them instantly. Her writing is an experience.
The characters in this book are far from likable, yet I kept reading. I was interested to find out what was going to happen. There is an unpredictability that almost mimics life itself, you just had to keep reading to find out more. Frances, our narrator, is cold and cruel at times. Her lack of self-worth or self-love forces her to idolise people around her, putting people on pedestals that will fall at some point. There are situations that happen to Frances in this book that are quite upsetting, and not being prepared for them made it incredibly hard to read at times.
I have so many thoughts on this book that I can’t quite put into words. The ending of this book was unexpected, and for me didn’t sit right. Exploring relationships through the novel for it to then end how it did seemed to be unusual. I can’t write exactly what happens due to spoilers, but it felt like there had been no character growth by the end.
