Another complicated book to rate. The things I liked about the first book, I liked about this one. The things i didn’t like about the first, i didn’t like in this. I adore Luther (though his no-thoughts-just-action knee-jerk response to anything related to Diem’s safety is frustrating), but I really don’t like Diem. She keeps making the same mistakes, and keeps trying to play both sides - much to everyone else’s safety. She consistently trusts the most obviously treacherous people, and is constantly doubting Luther, despite his clear devotion. She is brash and arrogant and spends so much time angry and feeling sorry for herself instead of trying to fix the problems she creates. She acts like a 16-year old rather than the 20-year old she is. which isn’t a huge age difference, but she should be acting a bit smarter than she is.
The other characters are well-written, and many are very unlikeable - but they’re supposed to be so it’s fun watching their schemes fail. I love that Diem is able to find a family at the palace, even if she regularly doubts the people who are the most steadfast in their loyalty. The political conflict is phenomenal, and I look forward to seeing it all come to a head in the second half of the saga.
