A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

1.0

I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for my rating of [b:A Wrinkle in Time|33574273|A Wrinkle in Time (Time Quintet, #1)|Madeleine L'Engle|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1507963312s/33574273.jpg|948387], but I really didn't like it. I think if I had read this when I was younger, I would have been all over it. Growing up, fantasy was my favourite genre and I loved books by authors like [a:Eva Ibbotson|57462|Eva Ibbotson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1360037190p2/57462.jpg] and [a:Cornelia Funke|15873|Cornelia Funke|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1437000100p2/15873.jpg]. In some ways [b:A Wrinkle in Time|33574273|A Wrinkle in Time (Time Quintet, #1)|Madeleine L'Engle|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1507963312s/33574273.jpg|948387] is very similar to books by these authors, so the difference must be me.

You know when you grow up watching a movie over and over, and your fond memories build it up so much that you view it as a 'classic', but then you watch it again as an adult and you're like what the heck? Either it's not actually that good or it's super weird/inappropriate in ways you never remembered. I recently had this experience watching The Sound of Music after a long time.

Basically what I'm driving at is that if I'd read this book for the first time as a kid, I probably would have loved it. Reading it for the first time as an adult, I was annoyed by the "silly" aspects of the story, like the names Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which, and Mrs. Who (even Charles Wallace), I didn't like Meg's character at all, and I didn't find the plot very engaging. I wasn't itching to pick up my book at every opportunity like I usually am. It took me a full 8 days to read it!

While I feel bad giving a book a one star rating, the official Goodreads 'definition' of a one star rating is "did not like it" which is not actually that mean! And I'm not saying it's a bad book by any means, just not for me.

What do you guys like/not like about this book? Do you have fond memories of reading it as a kid? Let me know and maybe you can give me some insights as to what I missed.
