This was such a good read. Your heart breaks learning what all of these teenage girls have gone through with their "baby daddies" and how they really had hopes with them and then *poof* they're disappeared away to this home for unwed mothers. My heart was breaking the whole time  I was reading for these girls, but especially Holly and you will absolutely understand why the second you get to a specific point. You end up completely understanding why these girls would turn to magic, would believe a woman claiming she's a witch and can help them help themselves. There are moments when I wanted to shake Fern, but then I have to remind myself she is literally only fifteen years old and the adults around her have 1) lied to her 2) mistreated her and 3) refused to believe her for her entire life.
