Mystery at the Manor by Matthew Costello, Neil Richards

4.0

A great little trio of mini-mysteries set in the village of Cherringham, in the Cotswalds area of the UK.

All three feature the detective work of web designer Sarah Edwards and retired NYPD Detective Jack Brennan. The relationship is one of mutual trust and respect, but no overt evidence of it being romantic. They fall into a mystery and discover that they both enjoy the detection process, and continue solving mysteries together. These stories are wonderful, and do not feel that they have been stilted or inflated to meet a certain size. Very enjoyable.

In "Episode One," Sarah's best friend Sammi has "accidentally drowned," according to the police. The situation does not feel right to Sarah, and she starts asking questions. She quickly meets Jack, who is intrigued by the situation, and together they work to determine what exactly happened.

"Episode Two" involves a dysfunctional family consisting of a grumpy septuagenarian and his three middle-aged children. Again, Sarah and Jack are drawn in to assist a friend who was close to the deceased.

"Episode Three" finds them again mixed up in a suspicious death, during the winter holidays.

In each episode, we learn a little more about Sarah and Jack. The character development is steady and pleasing. Highly recommended.
