Dude I LOVED this book!! I have read a lot of mixed reviews so wasn’t really sure what to expect coming into it. I was not disappointed. In fact, I couldn’t put this one down. I was listening to it on audio while reading it at home and instead of patiently waiting to hear more in the car I found myself drawn to this story and these characters. I LOVED these characters- especially Misery. I think the only thing I would wish for for this book would be to get a chapter or 2 in Lowe’s perspective. But my girl Misery- she was loyal almost to a fault. So brave. She had a “tough” exterior but really was kind of mushy on the inside. Watching her relationship with Lowe unfold was spectacular. She has never really been loved except by her brother so the level of vulnerability we saw with her in those scenes with him was done so well. I liked the little snippets we got from him at the beginning of each chapter. You could tell how much he was kind of in awe of her and how different she was then what he thought she would be. She surprised him in the best way. I loved all the other weres and that even though there was such bad blood between the vamps and them, they ended up welcoming Misery into the fold pretty easily. I loved how Lowe described what mates are- I found myself legit giddy. I especially loved Ana and her relationship with Misery and how she had that naivety that children can have which helped Misery have a friend early on.
Misery has found herself being summoned to her father’s office for the first time in like 5 years (but whose counting). She has no idea what to expect when he calls her but it was definitely not an arranged married to the new alpha of the werewolves. She of course says no but then learns her future hubby’s name and agrees. See she has been on a mission to find her missing friend Serena. Not really just her friend but like her sister. She disappeared several months ago and the only clue she found was L Moreland. So now Misery is back in enemy territory and has to play nice with her husband who can’t seem to stand her or the way she smells. She can’t deny that the dude is gorgeous. And though she thinks she is being stealthy, it’s clear there is something going on among the weres. She finds herself working closely with Lowe. She finds herself becoming protective of his little sister who Misery “can’t stand.” She finds herself feeling more at ease and at home than she ever has. And then there is this growing thing between her and Lowe. They can’t be a thing right? It’s all fake right? But then why does Lowe look at her like he wants to devour her. And why does kissing him make her blood sign and want to do things like drink from him which isn’t a thing in her culture right?? And then just when she thinks she has figured it out, when she has given him a part of her no one else has ever had, he pulls the guy out. But Misery isn’t one to shy away from the truth or what she wants, even if her father has something to say about it.
I felt so many thing in this book. I was anxious, curious, in awe, laughing out loud, fanning my face, fanning my face some more and then Lamont throwing the book across the room before realizing it was all going to be ok! Though I did read a lot of this, the audio was also wonderful. I can’t WAIT to hear more about Serena and Keon and to learn allll the things about them. I can’t recommend this one enough!!
