The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker

I really enjoyed "The Witch Hunter". It was similar to a lot of current YA fantasy novels, yet different enough to make it stand out. Elizabeth is a witch hunter along with her best friend Caleb. The world forbids magic and magic users (witches) are burned at the stake or beheaded. Even being caught with herbs used by witches can be cause for immediate incarceration and ultimately death. Elizabeth truly believes, although her job is an ugly one, that it is the right path that she is on. She is just upholding the law after all. But then Elizabeth herself is caught with witches herbs and is jailed. Even though she is one of the greatest Witch Hunters the world has ever seen, her pleas are met on deaf ears. She is rescued by Nicholas, the greatest sorcerer the world has ever seen and the world's most wanted man. Surely they are evil and want her for some nefarious purpose, right?

From this point of the novel on, Elizabeth must face the truth about her mentors and her witch hunting. Who truly is evil? Is magic all bad? Is everything Elizabeth ever known to be true just an elaborate lie?

I loved this world and I loved the side characters in this book tremendously. There is a little, sweet romantic side plot between Elizabeth and one of Nicholas's men, a healer. Its not intense, and the book is not a romance novel. But it is a nice addition and I like that John doesn't fit the normal mold of most YA leading men. He is shy and a healer. He is kind of geeky and that makes him adorable and somewhat unique. I also really, really like Fifer. She could star in her own book, seriously. There are so many layers to her that are intriguing. George is another fun side character. This group is so unusual and gripping. The specifics to the magical abilities are also fun and entertaining.

I wouldn't say there is anything groundbreaking or shocking about "The Witch Hunter" but it a well written, fast paced and entertaining book. This author is one to watch for sure. I have been in a pretty big dry spell especially regarding fantasy novels, but this one still had the ability to stand out and entertain me. I will eagerly be on the lookout for a sequel.
