Chicken Sunday by Patricia Polacco

Alicia has been on a real Patricia Polacco kick lately, so when I was pulling Easter display books I decided to read it. There are so many things about this story that are so entirely lovely. Not only is Polacco's illustration so beautiful, but her storytelling is perfect. The story is drawn from her youth, when she hung out with two neighborhood boys and went to church with them and their grandmother. They decide to buy her a hat she's been admiring, and end up in a misunderstanding with the shop owner. Because this story is pulled from her own experience, she seamlessly blends cultures into a beautifully nuanced little story that never feels forced or clunky.

I've shied away from PP's books in the past because they're so so so so long and wordy, but they're always worth it.
